Herdsperson Position - Hinxden Farm Dairy, Kent

Company Description

Hinxden Farm Dairy is a mixed retail dairy and arable farm in Kent, milking 230 cows split into two herds, calving all year round. There are 170 pedigree Holsteins and 60 pedigree Guernseys. Both herds are milked twice a day through a De Laval 24/24 herringbone parlour with ADF and a backing gate. The milk is kept separate for processing in the retail enterprise, where some of it is pasteurised and bottled, made into award winning cream, yogurt, crème fraîche and cheeses which are delivered by a fleet of vehicles 6 days per week across the South East.

We are a closed herd, rearing our own replacement heifers. The cows graze in the summer, and are fed maize, grass and wholecrop silage in the winter along with other concentrates and straights to maximise yield.

The arable enterprise grows wheat, barley and oats, along with grass and maize for silage.

Job Description

Roles and responsibilities of the herdsperson will include managing both herds on a day to day basis and performing the following tasks; milking to include some weekends on a rota, mastitis management, coordinating staff, heat detection and fertility management, footbathing and locomotion management, grassland management, record keeping using herd companion, cattle passports, movements and pedigrees online, assisting with Red Tractor and Arlagården® compliance.
