An experienced full-time Head Gardener is sought by one of Britain’s foremost country estates in Hertfordshire. This famous RHS-partner garden dates back to the 17th Century and has 28 acres of formal gardens. The gardens contain areas of roses, herbaceous borders, a maze and wilderness gardens. There is also a walled kitchen garden growing vegetables, fruit, herbs and flowers for cutting.  The propagation of a wide range of plants is conducted within the Victorian greenhouse and polytunnel which are used both within their own grounds and also sold to the public. The estate is open to the public for 6 months of the year and also houses wedding functions, filming, corporate bookings, an award-winning education programme and a series of public events. The garden team includes an Assistant Head Gardener, two full-time under gardeners, part-time staff and volunteers.  The successfully appointed Head Gardener will have the direct responsibility for staff supervision and training but will be working ‘hands-on’ alongside the team in the day to day running of the gardens, whilst also being involved with ongoing restoration and development of the gardens. In addition you will be responsible for the management of expenditure and budgets and will work closely with the Managing Director in deciding strategic planned works for the gardens. You will also be responsible for Health and Safety within the gardens department and for ensuring staff are made aware of correct procedures.  Applications are invited from experienced Head Gardeners who have good management and leadership skills. It is essential that candidates have suitable horticulture qualifications along with strong plant and tree knowledge. Candidates should also hold a PA1/PA6 chemical spray certificate as well as a full driving license. A chainsaw licence would be beneficial. This is an opportunity for an experienced Head Gardener with an appreciation for the pride associated with managing one of the country’s most well-known gardens.
