Many employees are good, some are superior and often only a few Employees are exceptional.
Below are a few ways how you can spot the difference.
A great Employee is usually easy to spot: Hard-working, reliable, a great leader – bringing a great set of key skills to the organisation. However, some Employees are exceptional – their skill set can’t be evaluated upon their performance appraisals – but instead are shown through the individual’s behaviour, how they perform around others and how the company results are affected by that individual.
Below are 8 signs which show an Employee is exceptional:
1. They work outside of the job description
When a company is small it’s very important that the Employees are able to think on their feet, use their own initiative and prioritise their work load in order to adapt quickly and ensure that everything is done for the company to continue running smoothly – regardless of the Employees position within the company, and regardless of what their job description instructs them to do. Employees who are exceptional are aware of when things need to be done to ensure smooth running of the company – and can act on it without being told what to do.
2. Exceptional Employees are quirky
Candidates who are a little different from the rest, a bit eccentric, and aren’t afraid to be different not only spice up the team but they usually come up with the best idea’s too.
3. Employees who know when to blend in
A unique personality can be fun within a team – but it’s very important that the Employee knows when to rein it in and bring it down a notch. It’s great to be different and stand out from the rest but it’s also very important that the Employee knows when they need to fit back in with the team; work hard, set an example and stay focused at the right time. It’s tough to find the balance between the two, and very few Employees are able to walk that fine line.
4. Exceptional employees praise others in public
Receiving praise from a Boss is great. But it’s also great to receive it from a colleague – especially when you look up to that person as an example within the company. Exceptional Employees recognise how others within the company are contributing – praise from peers gives off a good aura within the company.
5. They disagree privately
It’s good to address issues the right way. After all to solve a problem – you firstly need to address the issue. However, if you there is an issue that’s sensitive an exceptional Employee will pull that person aside to address it and won’t feel the need to bring it up in a group causing embarrassment, or a bad atmosphere.
6. Exceptional Employees will ask questions that good Employees wont
Many Employees have questions that they want to ask but are afraid to speak up. Exceptional Employees will pick up on this, and even if they already know the answer, will ask so that other hesitant Employees around them receive the answer that they would like to hear.
7. They like to prove people wrong
It’s important for Employees to have the key skills required for the job role that they are looking to pursue. However, exceptional Employees tend to have a drive to show that doubters are wrong and will pull out of all the stops to show that they are more than good enough for the job – exceeding all expectations.
8. Exceptional Employees are constant explorers
In a positive way – some people are never satisfied. They strive to be the best they can, improving their workload, time management and work process as much as they can. Good Employees follow a process, excellent Employees tweak how they work and exceptional Employees reinvent their work process – not because that’s what they are expected to do but because they can’t help it!
