Whether you are meeting a potential client, meeting with an Employer for a job interview, or meeting with somebody you would like to build a business relationship with - skills, experience and capability are not all that matters – it’s also very important to show that you are trustworthy and likeable.
Below are 8 ways you could make a great first impression:
1. As well as talking - listen MORE
Listening to somebody shows that you are paying attention and taking in what they have to say. Therefore, whilst you aren’t asking questions, are maintaining eye contact, smiling, nodding and frowning – you are engaging with that person and showing what they have to say is important. Listening portrays that you care a lot more than talking and providing advice does – as providing advice usually turns into a conversation about yourself for example: ‘Here is what I would do’
2. Don’t practice selective hearing
Everybody knows a person who listens but doesn’t actually take in or realise what’s being said – which implies that they are beneath that person and what they are saying isn’t important. To make a great first impression – listen closely to what the other person has to say – regardless of our position – listen to what other person has to say, as this looks as though you have something in common with the person making conversation.
3. Put things away
Don’t check your smart phone, don’t check your emails, don’t pay attention to your monitor or your iPad, and don’t focus on anything else. You can’t ever connect with somebody else whilst your attention is being drawn elsewhere. Provide your full undivided attention at all times – this alone will leave a great first impression.
4. Give before receiving – and don’t assume that you will receive
Instead of thinking what’s in it for you, think about what you can provide. The only way to establish a real connection and to build a relationship is to give. If you are focusing on what is in it for you the whole time – it makes you look selfish as you are only thinking about what is in it for yourself.
5. Don’t act self-obsessed
The only people who are amused by your self-importance, pretentious ways are other pretentious, self-important people. The rest of us aren’t amused – it irritates us, puts us off, and makes us feel uncomfortable and over-all gives off a bad vibe. It won’t leave a good impression.
6. Choose your words wisely
The words you chose make an impact on others attitudes.
For example: you don’t have to go to a meeting; you get to meet with other people. You don’t have to manage the farm; you get to work outside maintaining the farm. You don’t have to provide customer service; you get to talk with others.
If you give off a positive vibe to others your attitude will have a positive impact on others. After all we would all rather be associated with happy, enthusiastic people.
7. Avoid discussing the failings of others
We all love to hear a bit of gossip here and there. However, if you are the type of person to constantly dish the dirt about others, talk negatively of people and brag about others failings – it builds a negative complex and gives people a bad impression of you. Nobody will like or respect you if you are constantly back stabbing others – as they will assume you treat them the same way.
8. Do admit your own failings
Stay humble. All successful people will have made mistakes here and there to get to where they are today. Be honest about the errors you have made and laugh at yourself – you are only human! People with then laugh with you and not at you. They will like you more for it and will chose to be around you more.
These are just a few simple ways to leave a positive impression on others!
Have a great weekend!
