Sports teams are a perfect example of how multiple players working together can achieve more. After all there is no ‘i’ in team! Every person within a team has different skills and attributes and by working together, and combining all qualities together – the team will be able to score more goals and achieve fantastic results together.
Below are 5 tips on how to become a better team player within the workplace:
1. Communication is Key
It’s vital to have good communication skills in team work. Make sure you pay attention to your colleague’s ideas and suggestions, show support and enthusiasm – and most importantly assume the best of your colleagues.
Be sure to share information with each other. Everybody within the company is serving a purpose – everybody is working towards the same goal. Excellent communication skills help to make colleagues aware of what is required of them.
2. Be Responsible
If you are aware that a task needs to be carried out within your team and you are capable of carrying it out – then speak up and take on the responsibly of accomplishing it. If all of the team shares the workload equally – timelines and deadlines will be met.
3. Be Reliable
Once you have committed to carrying out a task – be sure to follow it through as you promised to do so. If for any reason you aren’t able to complete the task, discuss it with your group and help find a solution – this will prevent your team from feeling in the dark. After all you want your team to see that you produce good quality work – and are a reliable source to the team. If you are hardworking one minute and sloppy the next – they will assume that you are unreliable.
4. Be Ready
Change can happen very quickly within a team. People come and go, deadlines can change, and budgets can be cut. Good team players need to be able to adjust to change – as change is opportunity to grow. If you are able to positively and comfortable adjust to change within the team – your boss is likely to take note – this is a very important key skill.
5. Think Positive
Remain positive at all times. Have a positive outlook throughout the day, offer positive feedback to your team and remain positive in all situations. Not only will you bring a good vibe to the workplace but it will also encourage more ideas, decisions and better overall results for the team.
