Our generation is dominated by technology – and therefore people spend a lot of their time browsing the web and using their mobile phones. As people switch between their devices, such as their laptops, iPad’s, computers and smart phones they are stuck between different media competing for their attention. Therefore it is extremely important that job advertisers have an application process that encourages candidates to complete their application. Otherwise, if the application process is poor, the candidate won’t stay engaged and won’t complete the application process when applying for your jobs!
So what can you do to ensure all great candidates complete their application when applying for one of your jobs?
Below are four explanations as to why candidates don’t complete the application process, and what you as an employer can do to keep the candidate engaged, allowing them to complete their job application.
1. Your job description is lacking information and looks too brief, no salary information?
The job title is the hook that entices the job seeker to apply for the position. Therefore it is crucial that the job title and job description catches the candidates attention, ensuring you attract the right candidates for the job. When writing a job description, remember to include a brief summary about your company and its qualities – what does your company have to offer that your competitors and other companies don’t have? Include all of the job role requirements, what must the successful candidate have to be applicable for the job role? Must the candidate have relevant qualifications, experience or training? What exciting benefits will you offer the successful applicant, salary package, bonus, pension scheme, mobile phone, company car, laptop? Include as much information as you can – the more detail that you include, the better the response will be.
2. Your application contains too many filter questions
Job seekers want a quick and easy application process, and don’t want a frustrating lengthy process – or they will give up the application process. Although filter questions are a fantastic way of weeding the irrelevant candidates, it can reduce the number of applications that you receive by up to 90%. Filter questions may remove poor candidates, however they can eliminate the great ones too! By not including too many filter questions when possible reduces the frustration of the lengthy process, resulting in more applications. Don’t reduce your chances of finding the perfect candidate by too much!
3. You aren't choosing a job board that offers a mobile friendly application
Over 50% of job seekers apply for jobs using their mobile phone device, they find applying for jobs convenient, quick and easy with the use of their mobile phones. However, there are still many websites that don’t offer a mobile-friendly application process. Although candidates can access jobs on their mobile phone, it may sometimes be difficult to see the job description, making it difficult to understand the job role, and not encouraging the suitable candidates to apply.
4. You aren't advertising your advert on a relevant and niche job board relevant to the job!
Some companies out there just advertise with any job board who offer the cheapest prices – this is a BIG mistake! You need to advertise the job with a niche job board that ideally specialises in the sector that the job is with. Or the candidates that are looking for jobs in that sector may miss seeing the job as they are looking on specific job boards that they feel has the most suitable jobs for them!
This is why Agricultural and Farming Jobs is perfect! What better way to advertise your agriculturally related position – all the candidates on the site on registered or seeking job as they specifically want to work in this sector and have a related education, qualifications and/or experience! Don’t waste money advertising jobs on any job board – always use a specialist job board!
By focussing on the context of your job description, and making the application process as quick, easy and efficient as you possibly can, your job posting will be optimised to gain more applications, encouraging fantastic candidates that you could have missed otherwise.
