General Dairy Farm Worker

Location of the Job:

East Midlands.

Salary & Benefits Package:

  • Basic salary of £35,000 per year depending on experience.

About The Company and Position:

The Farm consists of 154ha, 380 acres.

Mainly new leys and some limited permanent pasture, periodically some wheat and maize is grown.

The main enterprise is Dairy. There are 2 block calving herds, 150 spring and 225 autumns, the farm rears its own replacements.

All beef calves are reared to 3 weeks before being sold.

There is a grazing focus and excellent new infrastructure to manage, house and feed the stock.

The infrastructure comprises 3-year-old cubicle housing/feeding, parlour, handling, tracks and paddocks and a series of other ancillary buildings. The autumn calvers are fed a mixed forage semi-complete ration.

Grass silage is made through a series of 3-4 cuts using a contractor and Maize is supplied from a neighbouring contract farmer.

Key Responsibilities:
You will…

As General Farm Worker you will be responsible for reporting to the owner, with responsibility for supporting the day to day running of the Farm:

  • Liaising with the Owner on a day-to-day basis and attending any regular meetings.

  • Day to day running of the business.

  • Working in liaison with Herd Manager & his Assistant.

  • Service and maintenance of machinery and highlighting mechanical or significant issues that may need further specialist intervention.

  • Responsible for building and infrastructure maintenance.

Winter Regular Tasks to include:

  • Scraping housing and yards, by tractor and scraper - solid passages to slurry channels, slurry is subsequently separated. Slurry is spread by umbilical contractors.

  • Feeding grass and maize with a supplementary concentrate/blend via a BVL twin auger mixer.

  • Cleaning and bedding down of cubicles with sawdust, via a ride on machine.

  • All aspects of calf rearing, milk powder, solid feeds and bedding etc.

  • Colostrum to new-born calves or liaising/setting protocols

Summer tasks to include:

  • Fertilising.

  • Mowing.

  • Tedding.

  • Fencing with height tensile single strand electric.

  • Good understanding of grazing management would be preferable to assist movement/management of sub-paddocks.

  • Occasional relief milking would be advantageous.

Ideal Person Skills & Qualifications:
You will have / be…

  • Farm work experience.

  • Skilled in operating and driving tractors and other farm machinery.

  • Dairy farm experience - milking and feeding cows.

  • Excellent communication skills.

  • Able to work well as part of a team.
