Grower (Nursery - Horticulture)

Job Summary:

Focusing on plant production, to work on all areas of the nursery including plant care and maintenance, order picking and plant selecting, plant sale and display, to enable Company objectives to be met.

Be able to work independently and as part of a team, communicating effectively to ensure efficient completion of the work.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

Nursery department :

Work efficiently as part of the nursery team, to ensure all stock is grown, nurtured and displayed to the highest possible standards. Duties include, but not limited to:

  • Plant production, husbandry and maintenance

  • Potting

  • Watering

  • Feeding

  • Trimming

  • Crop monitoring

  • Record keeping (computer and written)

  • Application of crop protection products (qualified persons only)

  • Site maintenance

  • Irrigation systems

  • Beds

  • Planted areas of the site

  • Loading and unloading of lorries

  • Sales (Cash and Carry)

  • Display and presentation of plants

  • Report shortages of product lines on the nursery

  • Customer service

Sales and Customer Orders :

During busy periods it may be necessary to complete work in other departments such as order picking, this would include :

-Timely selection and collation of stock to fulfil customer orders.

-Customer Service

-Updating computer records

-Communication with the sales team

Out of hours responsibilities :

As part of the nursery team be available to work over weekends and bank holidays, on a rota basis to ensure continuity of plant care, particularly irrigation.

Company Procedures :

Follow Health and Safety procedures. Carry out tasks efficiently and effectively, and in accordance with the Company Policies and Procedures. Ensure that all relevant information is documented and dealt with appropriately.

Assist with any other tasks that can reasonably be considered to be appropriate to this position and within your capabilities.

Development :

Physical Working Conditions and Environment :

They will be expected to work in all weathers, such as cold and rain. The role requires the applicants to be physically fit as some heavy lifting may be necessary.

Skills, Knowledge and Competencies:

The post holder will be expected to meet the requirements of the post and the person specification.

The post holder has a duty of care to themselves and to others with whom they come into contact in the course of their work. All accidents must be reported to the post holder’s line manager immediately they have occurred, however minor the accident may appear on the surface.

Person Specification ; In addition to any personal attributes already mentioned.

Essential - Five GCSEs including Maths and English, or equivalent. Holder of a UK driving licence. Technical knowledge of growing principles . Horticultural background. Computer literate – familiar with Excel and Microsoft Office. Able to use initiative in problem solving issues.

Desirable - A recognised qualification in horticulture, or an equivalent relevant discipline, NPTC PA1, PA6a, PA2 would be desirable. Commercial horticultural experience. Experience of commercial horticultural software.

This role could be suitable for a trainee with the willingness to learn and the desire to grow with the business. The salary of between £18,000 - £24,000 per annum will depend on skills, qualifications and previous experience.
