The Company:

Our client is a Horticultural Nursery who are extremely well-established family run business. Running a large site, including a modern glasshouse nursery. A successful and independent young plant company supplying ornamental plants to growers, and garden centres throughout the UK. Due to consistent growth and expansion, they are seeking to recruit a new Assistant Head Grower.

The Job Role Details:

To oversee the production and growing of quality products on a large commercial scale, as Assistant Head Grower. Responsible for the day to day running of the nursery and bedding plants, pot plant plugs, poinsettias and garden centre flowering plants, as well as crop planning, in consultation with other members of staff. You will be required to meet set specifications and input targets whilst managing all processes throughout with specific focus on quality and wastage management. Assisting with the responsibility of the growing team – motivate, direct, and communicate with the staff. Then continues throughout the growth of the plants, implementing a comprehensive pest and disease control/ management, irrigation, and feed management.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist with staff delegation and management under the Head Grower

  • To ensure all potting activity is completed to required quantities and deadlines, maximising efficiencies whilst managing high quality.

  • Plan for and call-in all production material as required and in liaison with the companies purchasing team.

  • Control the quality of incoming goods.

  • Provide for and deliver all irrigation and crop husbandry requirements.

  • Ensure crop protection and weed control requirements are met.

  • Maintain excellent housekeeping, accurate inventory and records as required.

  • Assist in the efficiency movement of stock between sties.

  • Follow company procedures and policies ensuring legislative compliance.

Ideal Person Skills and Qualifications:

  • 5 years ideally - Growing experience (could be less if right attitude)

  • Horticultural Qualification – Or equivalent acquired hands-on experience.

  • Passionate

  • High Technical understanding working within a Nursery.

  • People person / Team player

  • Spraying Certificates - PA1 and PA6 = MUST

  • Practical experience within this industry sector

  • Open/ Adaptable

  • Flexible with good problem-solving skills.

  • Enthusiastic, practical with an eye for detail

 

Salary package:

£ 25,000 p.a. - £30,000 p.a.
